Dr. Derek Furrow was born and raised in Johnston, IA, and graduated from Johnston High School. He went on to complete his undergraduate studies at Iowa State University with a degree in Exercise Science/Integrated Physiology. He then went to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry to continue his education and obtain his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.
During dental school, he was awarded the Dentsply Sirona Prosthetics Merit Award, to recognize an outstanding junior/senior dental student in fixed and removable prosthodontics. Dr. Derek loves to treat patients of all ages, but had the privilege of receiving extra training in treating pediatric patients at St. Luke’s Hospital during his clinical rotations. Dr. Derek continues to stay involved in organizational dentistry and strives to be a lifelong learner so he can better treat patients of all ages.
Following graduation, Dr. Derek returned to the Des Moines area and practiced for 2.5 years in Johnston and 2.5 years in Pleasant Hill. In 2022, after working 5 years as an associate dentist, he and his wife, Dr. Emily, started Furrow Family Dentistry and began working together. Dr. Derek is so excited to be back to his hometown and continue serving the community and building lifelong relationships with his patients.
Outside of work, Dr. Derek loves to spend time with family and friends. He and Dr. Emily have a son named Hayes, a daughter named Ellington, and a third baby on the way! They also have two mini Goldendoodles, named Flez and Frankie. Dr. Derek also loves to work out and try new restaurants in the area.
