Same-Day Crowns – Johnston, IA
Process of Making a Crown using CAD/CAM technology
A dental crown or “cap” is made to go over your natural tooth or implant. It is used to strengthen a tooth and improve its appearance. Your custom made crown is fabricated specifically to fit your tooth and mouth, and can be made from a variety of materials. Most often we use ceramic blocks with our CAD/CAM system to fabricate crowns that perfectly blend with the natural color of your teeth. This system allows us to fabricate crowns in only one appointment!
To prepare your tooth, the top and the sides must be shaped to make room for the new crown. Next, a digital impression will be taken using a scanning wand. It will take digital pictures and our computer software will create a 3D model of your teeth. Our team will create a digital design of your crown which is sent to a mill in our office. This mill carves out the shape of the crown from a ceramic block. Depending on which material is chosen and the amount of personalization added to improve the color match, the milling and glazing process can take anywhere from 45-90 minutes.
Depending on your preference, you may wait for your crown and have it placed or “seated” the same day. Another option is to have a temporary crown placed on your tooth and return to the office in about a week to have your permanent crown cemented into place.
The technique and steps are similar for a bridge, though processing times are increased.
